Voice of Wind

Pavilion Design and Construction

Professor: Shen Gao

The site is located in the Mingshan District of Ya’an City, a region renowned for its lush tea mountains and scenic landscapes. Nestled among the rolling hills, the site offers an expansive view of over 270 degrees, making it an ideal vantage point to appreciate the surrounding natural beauty. The area is part of a designated scenic zone and attracts both locals and tourists for its tranquil atmosphere and cultural richness.

Near the site, there is a small hotel that serves visitors exploring the region. The hotel owner also owns a nearby open hillside, which enjoys exceptional panoramic views of the tea fields and mountains. Our design task is to create a pavilion on this open land—an architectural intervention that provides a resting and viewing space for tea pickers, local residents, and travelers alike. The pavilion is intended not only to frame the landscape but also to enhance the overall experience of the site by offering a moment of pause, reflection, and connection with the natural environment.

We spent a week designing and hand-building a physical model of the pavilion, which helped us better understand the spatial relationships, construction logic, and material expression of the project.

Final design....

To maximize the viewing experience, the pavilion was designed as an elongated structure. The columns naturally divide the long corridor into a series of equally sized “viewing rooms.” We further emphasized this rhythm by introducing a contrast between light white waterproof fabric and solid wooden elements. The fabric is used to frame the view in each bay, offering a sense of intimacy and partial privacy for visitors as they pause to look out.

The white fabric gently moves with the wind, creating a dynamic contrast with the stillness of the vertical timber structure. This interaction brings a sense of lightness and vitality to the pavilion. Sitting within it, one can not only enjoy the view but also listen to the sound of the wind, an immersive, sensory experience that deepens the connection between people and landscape.
